USS New York

A full 1:1 scale voxel build of USS New York as she appeared circa 1945 — built to understand her form well enough to draw her.

Why Build It

Building a ship in voxels forces a different kind of attention than drawing one. Every casemate, gun tub, and section of the cage mast has to actually exist in three dimensions, at true scale, or the whole thing reads wrong from every angle — not just the one angle a drawing commits to. It's the same research as the pen-and-ink series, worked out as a full-scale, walkable structure instead of a fixed view.

Built from a mix of historical photographs and real deck plans, the model carries the ship's wartime camouflage scheme, full superstructure, and armament layout at true 1:1 scale.
